House style and sections
Tone, length, house rules, banned phrases, never-mention lists, pronunciation glossary and the sections of your paper.
House style is how your paper sounds. Sections are what it covers. Both live under Settings. Owners, admins and editors can change them.
Voice and length
| Tone | Feels like |
|---|---|
| Classic newspaper (default) | Measured, third person, inverted pyramid. |
| Smart brevity | Short, scannable, bolded lead-ins. |
| Warm & conversational | Friendly and personal, without the fluff. |
| Executive briefing | What happened, why it matters, what’s next. |
| Playful | Lighter, with wit, still accurate. |
Length: Quick (about 3 minutes, up to 7 stories), Standard (about 6 minutes, up to 13) or Long (about 12 minutes, up to 20). Tone and length apply to the whole publication.
House rules
Rules are plain sentences of 4 to 500 characters, and there are four kinds:
| Kind | Example | How it’s applied |
|---|---|---|
| Style | “Refer to customers by company name, never by contact name.” | Given to the writer |
| Always | “Always mention the customer’s industry in a win story.” | Given to the writer |
| Never | “Never speculate about deals that haven’t closed.” | Given to the writer. Any quoted term in a never rule is also enforced by the hidden-machinery gate. |
| Exclude | #random, channel:legal, person:Jane Doe, topic:reorg | Applied in code at collection: matching items never reach the writer. Separate entries with commas, semicolons or new lines. A bare word is treated as a topic. |
Rules can apply to the whole publication or to a single edition, so a Sales edition can have its own voice.
Banned phrases
A built-in list of tired phrases (“a testament to”, “game-changer”, “delve into” and more) is always enforced by the style gate. Add your own at Settings›Style; up to 200 phrases are stored as never rules and enforced by the verification gates. Quotes from customers are exempt.
Never mention
Names, projects or words that must never appear: a confidential codename, a customer under NDA. Matching is whole-word and case-insensitive. Items that mention a term are dropped at collection, and any story that still contains one is dropped at verification. Up to 500 entries.
Glossary
Tell the audio edition how to say things: Northwind → North-wind. Up to 500 terms.
Footer
A line under every edition, up to 200 characters. Default: “Confidential · For internal use only”.
Sections
Turn sections on, off and reorder them at Settings›Sections. Each story is placed in the first enabled section that fits its kind, in a fixed order of preference (a win goes to New Customers & Expansions, else Revenue & Targets). A story with no enabled section is left out, so turning off Team News means hires and anniversaries don’t run.
| Section | On by default | Carries |
|---|---|---|
| New Customers & Expansions | Yes | Wins, expansions and the “Also signed” roundup |
| Customer Calls | Yes | Notable calls with verbatim customer quotes; overflow for losses, risks and pipeline |
| What Customers Are Saying | Yes | Customer voices and feedback themes |
| Product & Engineering | Yes | Releases, shipped work and fixes |
| Competitors & Buying Decisions | Yes | Competitor mentions and lost deals |
| Support & Customer Health | No | Churn and account risks (when off, churn runs in Revenue & Targets) |
| Team News | Yes | Hires, anniversaries, promotions and shout-outs |
| Revenue & Targets | Yes | The numbers, large pipeline moves, and the fallback for wins and churn |
| Call of the Day | No | Calls, when Customer Calls is off |
| The Bigger Picture | No | One analysis of the last 14 days against the 14 before, with the counter-evidence; runs once 28 days of history exist |
